MacGowan, who transformed Irish traditional music with The Pogues and penned some of the most haunting ballads of the 1980s' before sinking into alcohol and drug addiction, died after a prolonged period of ill health. MacGowan achieved mainstream success with his bittersweet, expletive-strewn 1987 Christmas anthem "Fairytale of New York. MacGowan brought Irish traditional music to a huge new audience in the late 1980s by splicing it with punk, and achieved mainstream success with his bittersweet, expletive-strewn 1987 Christmas anthem "Fairytale of New York". Irish President Michael D. Higgins, also a poet, described MacGowan on Thursday as one of music's greatest lyricists. Following a decade with a new band, the Popes, MacGowan and the Pogues reunited and toured regularly until 2014.

O'Connor, best known for the 1990 chart-topping hit "Nothing Compares 2 U", died on Wednesday aged 56 after police found her unresponsive at an address in London. "My mam rang me last night and she said did you hear about Sinead and she didn't even have to say the second name. She gave two fingers to the church, who at that time in the 90s had such a hold over Ireland.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead. However, it was track six on the follow-up album, "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got", that catapulted O'Connor to global fame. O'Connor converted to Islam in 2018 and changed her name to Shuhada Sadaqat, though continued to perform under the name Sinead O'Connor.

☆ Northern Irish police charge seven men in detective shooting case

BELFAST, May 27 (Reuters) - Seven men have been charged with the attempted murder of senior Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) detective John Caldwell, according to a police statement. Two men aged 28, and five men aged 33, 38, 45, 47 and 72, have been charged with attempted murder. I would like to thank the PSNI for their efforts and the progress they have made in the case," Britain's Northern Ireland minister Chris Heaton-Harris said on Twitter. All seven men are expected to appear before Dungannon Magistrates Court on Monday. Three of the men, aged 28, 33 and 47, have also been charged with preparation of terrorist acts.

In a British government document setting out details of the deal, London said the mechanism gives it an "unequivocal veto" on EU rules when 30 members of Northern Ireland's devolved government from two or more parties object. "Once the UK notifies the EU that the brake has been triggered, the rule in question is suspended automatically from coming into effect," the document published on the British government website said. "This would give the UK an unequivocal veto - enabling the rule to be permanently disapplied - within the Joint Committee." If the UK accepts these conditions have been met, it would commence intensive consultations at the joint committee. This would be because of a divergence in trade rules between Northern Ireland and Ireland - and thus the broader EU, London noted.

DUBLIN, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Irish consumer sentiment dipped slightly in November as people grew concerned about job losses in the country's tech sector, a survey showed on Monday. The Credit Union Consumer Sentiment index fell to 45.3 from 46.1 in October, having recorded a 14-year low of 42.1 in September even as the economy continued to grow in the face of the rising cost of living. Foreign-owned companies employ more than 275,000 people in Ireland, or one in nine workers, and the survey's authors believe that recent job losses in the large multinational tech sector are adding to consumer caution. But they also detected an element of resilience in the Irish reading when compared with the United States, where many of the tech layoffs have been announced. The United States suffered a significant and unexpected drop in consumer sentiment this month.
